Conversion Sattcon control system to ABB AC800M | Willemsspoortunnel

Willemsspoortunnel

The Willemsspoort tunnel is a four-track tunnel in the centre of Rotterdam (the Netherlands) underneath the Nieuwe Maas River. It is part of the Breda – Rotterdam railway line. A part of the tunnel is the very well-known underground station, Rotterdam Blaak.

The tunnel was opened in 1993 and automated with a Sattcon control system. In 2010, it was decided to completely renew this control system. In collaboration with VTN, IAS replaced the entire Sattcon control system. By means of a conversion tool developed in collaboration with ABB, the existing software was converted to an ABB Compact Control Builder with ABB AC800M controllers.

This solution allowed for fast realisation of the new control system and meant minimal downtime at commencement of operation. By now, the new operating system has been running without any problems since 2010 and the new hardware will last for many more years.

We have worked on drawing up the functional and technical specifications for the software to be built, and on building the 800xA software for the tunnel and realizing the connections with the many mutual systems. In addition, we have been intensively involved in the SAT and ISAT tests of the ABB system.

We have developed a pumping station configurator for the Schieland and Krimpenerwaard Water Board (HHSK), which employees use to program and configure water board objects such as pumping stations, weirs and measuring points.

BatenburgIAS also contributed to the realization of the control layer. Several engineers from Batenburg IAS were involved in the realization of the software for this control. This includes making the GUI (operating plates), developing the critical and sub-critical tunnel functions, but also testing the many software modules.
